The Club's monthly meetings are a key part of the PROBUS experience. They allow the Management Committee to provide updates, and they enable all members to catch up with friends (old and new), discuss upcoming events and activities and to generally participate in the ongoing development of the club.
Our monthly meetings are usually held on the 3rd Wednesday of the month from 10:00am to noon but due to the March Break, this month the meeting is on the 2nd Wednesday, which is March 11th.
There is a $2 charge for attending the meeting which helps cover the meeting expenses. Coffee will be served and members are encouraged to bring their own mugs.
PROBUS meetings always feature a guest speaker and this month will be no exception:
Dr. Mike Daley holds a Ph.D in music from York University and is a musicologist, specializing in the history of popular music. He has taught at Guelph, McMaster, Waterloo and York Universities; he has toured the United States and Canada as a musician with Jeff Healey; and also featured on dozens of recordings as a guitarist and singer. Mike and his wife Jill live in Toronto and are presently leading music-themed tours to New York, Nashville/Memphis, London/Liverpool, St. John's and New Orleans.
Mike will speak about Leonard Cohen's life and work, interspersing his narrative with classic Cohen songs.
The popular image of Leonard Cohen, who died at age 82 in November 2016, is that of the bard with the brooding baritone voice plucking away at a guitar. But for Mike, that deep, sometimes-morose voice has concealed the richness and variety of Cohen’s musical and lyrical abilities. “In checking out his whole body of work… his songwriting style is much more varied than I thought.”
