    Our Next Speaker

Our speaker for our October meeting is philosopher, educator, public speaker and author, Dr. Christopher DiCarlo    Dr. DiCarlo is the Principal and Founder of Critical Thinking Solutions, a consulting business for individuals, corporations, and not-for-profits in both the private and public sectors and is the Ethics Chair for the Canadian Mental Health Association

Dr. DiCarlo has spoken at numerous national and international conferences and has written many scholarly papers.   He is also the author of several books including his best-seller: ‘How to Become a Really Good Pain in the Ass’.   His latest book, ‘Building a God: The Ethics of Artificial Intelligence and the Race to Control’ will be released early next year.

Dr DiCarlo has presented to us - and inspired us - three times before but this time he has a new and critical subject:  Artificial Intelligence and the Future of Humanity.

In this presentation he will first cover the basics of AI in reference to key terms, concepts, and issues.  Then he will take a look at some of the promising benefits such as medical miracles, advancements in education, and increases in efficiency and automation, etc.   However, he will also stress how important it is to realize that there are ways in which AI could present risks and generate harm; either intentionally or unintentionally.

When we use critical thinking and ethical reasoning to consider the potential benefits and harms of AI, we are much more empowered to discuss how we want these new forms of technologies to affect our lives as we move into the uncertain future”.

    Thanks Laura

    Activities

One of the many benefits of membership is access to regularly scheduled gatherings of club members who share common interests.  Some Activities are seasonal, while others run throughout the year.

Providing a variety of activities gives members an opportunity to get to know each other better while doing something that they enjoy.  We currently have over a dozen such groups in our club, like euchre, weekly group walks, book and movie clubs, golf, trivia and much more.

    Events

Our members enjoy a variety of social events.  Some local events include going to theatres and tourist attractions and visiting local restaurants for lunch or dinner.  We educate as well as entertain by providing trips to museums, historic sites and tours of local businesses and industries.  We come together annually to celebrate special times together like summer BBQ's and Holidays. These special events require advance registration and payment.

On this page you can also see details of multi-day trips and vacations organized especially for PROBUS Members through HNA Travel by Lakeside member Shirlie van Puttin.

Carlton University needs our help with a unique project called Sensor Networks for Safe and Engaged Mature Drivers (SENSE-MD).

We are currently conducting a study titled "SENSE-MD: Survey for Mature Drivers," and we are inviting Canadian residents aged 55 or older who currently hold or have held a valid driver’s license in the past year to participate. The survey is anonymous and takes 20-30 minutes to complete. Your participation will greatly assist us in developing technology to help older drivers access personalized risk information, promote safer driving, and support aging in place.  Click here for more information.

The survey is available online and can be completed at any time before October 31, 2024. As a token of appreciation, participants will have the option to enter a draw for one of ten $25 Amazon gift cards.
